For our eighth performance, #APBMusic ventures to Charleston to showcase singer/songwriter Hrlum. Originating from Spartanburg, SC, Hrlum began her musical journey at the age of 6, under the guidance of her father. Throughout high school, she explored her musical interests on her school laptop and at 18, she released her first song. Now, with airy melodies and expressive lyrics, Hrlum crafts a unique sound meant to heal the soul.
We had the chance to sit down with Hrlum following her performance. During our conversation, we discussed her artistic influences, explored her beginnings as a musician, and discussed her vision for future collaborations.
WHAT INSPIRED YOUR ENTRANCE INTO MUSIC?
Hrlum: It happened organically. My dad gifted me a keyboard at 6, and I began teaching myself melodies from around the house.
HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU RECORDED YOUR FIRST TRACK, AND WHEN DID YOU FEEL CONFIDENT TO SHARE YOUR MUSIC?
Hrlum: In high school, I dabbled in GarageBand, recording harmonies. At 18, I recorded my first track, sharing it on SoundCloud.
WHAT DOES STYLE MEAN TO YOU?
Hrlum: Style is a fluid fingerprint, distinct yet ever-changing, capable of taking diverse forms and shapes.
NAME SOME ARTISTS THAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE.
Hrlum: People are aware I enjoy a wide range. Maybe Tyler, the Creator? I was an avid Odd Future fan, going way back.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
Hrlum: Celestial, patterned, mentally stimulating, expressive.
IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANY ARTIST OR NON-ARTIST, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
Hrlum: Esperanza Spalding. We share a unique musical language, and I'm curious about the creations our shared language might birth.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR HRLUM?
Hrlum: Currently in the recording process for my EP, so stay tuned for upcoming music releases!
